A specialist advanced training led by Dr Debra Wesselmann, a leading EMDR therapist, EMDRIA-approved trainer, consultant, and author in the area of attachment injury and EMDR with young persons. The programme covers the Integrative Attachment Trauma Protocol for Children/Adolescents (IATP-C), equipping clinicians to work developmentally and relationally with young clients affected by attachment disruption and trauma.

Dr Debra Wesselmann, MS, LIMHP
EMDR trainer · Co-founder, The Attachment and Trauma Center of Nebraska
Debra Wesselmann, MS, LIMHP has specialised in treating attachment trauma for over 30 years. In 2008, she co-founded The Attachment and Trauma Center of Nebraska, where she co-developed and researched an integrative EMDR and family therapy model for treating attachment trauma in children and adolescents, and co-developed an EMDR attachment-focused therapy for adults.
In addition to her clinical work, Debra is now an EMDR trainer with the EMDR Institute founded by Francine Shapiro, PhD, where she co-developed the EMDR Basic Training With Child Supplemental Material. She serves on the board of The EMDR Journal of Practice and Research and has authored and co-authored numerous books, articles, and chapters — including two chapters co-authored with EMDR founder Francine Shapiro, PhD. As a recognised expert in attachment issues, Ms. Wesselmann presents keynotes and workshops for organisations both nationally and internationally.

IATP-C — the Integrative Attachment Trauma Protocol for Children and Adolescents — is a structured, EMDR-based framework co-developed by Dr Wesselmann for treating attachment injury and developmental trauma in young clients. It weaves EMDR reprocessing with family therapy, attachment repair, and developmentally attuned interventions so clinicians can work relationally with children, adolescents, and their caregivers. Case-series studies in the US, the Netherlands, and New Zealand have shown promising outcomes for the approach.
- Stage 1 — Parent psychoeducation and case conceptualisation grounded in the Adaptive Information Processing model.
- Stage 2 — EMDR and family therapy activities with children and caregivers to build trust, calm dysregulation, and cultivate positive affect.
- Stage 3 — Gentle EMDR processing of triggers and traumas, with therapeutic stories to make sense of the most difficult histories.

Participants will leave prepared to identify obstacles to recovery in children affected by attachment trauma; apply the three-stage IATP-C model to externalising and internalising presentations; use play and a playful demeanour to reduce defences during preparation and stabilisation; deliver EMDR resource development to enhance positive affect toward self and caregivers; explain adaptive information processing to parents in accessible language; develop therapeutic stories that provide adaptive information before reprocessing; adapt EMDR for children with prenatal substance exposure or neurodivergence; and recognise dissociation in children and teens that signals a need for additional preparation strategies.
Prerequisite: completion of Basic EMDR Training. Curriculum adapted from Dr Wesselmann's IATP-C training (debrawesselmann.com).
Certification pathway
Attending the training is the first step. Clinicians who go on to meet full certification requirements — over and above the training itself — will be listed in the ICPA practitioner directory and on our US partner's directory, giving certified practitioners visibility to families and referrers seeking IATP-C–trained clinicians.
Full certification criteria are being finalised. This section will be updated with the confirmed requirements (e.g. supervised cases, consultation hours, submitted recordings) once published.

Certification is optional. The training itself carries 12 EMDRIA credits and a certificate of completion.
